Opal cleaning, descaling and filters by model
Last checked 2026-10-03.
GE's Opal 2.0 manual says to descale every 4 weeks depending on water hardness, with water under 12 grains per gallon, and recommends sanitizing weekly; the Opal Mini manual says to descale once a month. Both say to drain the machine when it is put away, off for more than a few days or little used, because recirculating meltwater may affect taste. The Opal 2.0 Ultra models take GE's P4INK filters; the Opal Mini Pro takes P4NMK filters. No filter part is listed for both.

For the Opal 2.0 Ultra models, part numbers are from each model's GE owner-centre accessory list, a compatibility statement. For the Opal Mini Pro, GE's owner-centre parts page lists no accessories: P4NMKRAZAA, P4NMKSAZAA and P4DNK6CLEAN are the "Related Product" entries in GE's product-page specifications for the P4NM25PZSG, alongside the Opal Mini manual's statement that Opal Mini Water Filters are the only compatible filters. GE does not state that the P4INK and P4NMK filters fit each other's machines, so this page does not say they do. Filters and cleaning parts are named, not linked. GE's specifications for all four models also carry the generic line "Compatible with Opal Taste and Odor Filter and Opal Scale Inhibiting Filter, 3 month life"; it names no part number.
Descaling, sanitizing and draining
Opal 2.0 Ultra (XPIO13, XPIOX3 and XPIO23 series)
- Descale: "should be performed every 4 weeks depending on water hardness"; harder water may need more frequent descaling.
- Sanitize: recommended weekly; with tap water the schedule may need adjusting for water hardness.
- Water: "Water hardness must be less than 12 grains per gallon." GE suggests distilled water to limit scale.
- Drain: drain when you put it away or move it, when you turn it off for more than a few days, or when you are not using much ice: "Continuous recirculation of meltwater may affect taste".
- Water filter: "The Opal Water Filter ... is the only water filter compatible with Opal" (manual).
Procedure (the Opal 2.0 owner's manual (49-9000075 Rev. 2)):
- Control panel shown on the manual's page 8: hold Clean to start a 55-minute descale cycle with one packet of Opal citric-acid descaler in a full reservoir of hot water; tap Clean for a 3-minute sanitize cycle
- Control panel shown on the manual's page 9: hold Clean to start a 3-minute descale cycle, run it several times, then let the unit soak; repeat for very heavy scale. Sanitizing is also a 3-minute cycle
- Either way: drain first, remove any accessory filter and refit the mesh screen, then rinse with fresh water afterwards, draining between rinses
The manual tells the two procedures apart by the control-panel figure, not by model number; match the figure to your own display.
Opal Mini Pro (P4NM25 series)
- Descale: "ONCE A MONTH depending on water hardness"; harder water may need more frequent descaling.
- Sanitize: not given a separate schedule in the Opal Mini manual.
- Water: GE suggests distilled water to limit scale.
- Drain: drain when you put it away or move it, when you turn it off for more than a few days, or when you are not using much ice: "Continuous recirculation of meltwater may affect taste"; the drain tube is behind the lower front panel.
- Water filter: "The Opal Mini Water Filters ... are the only water filters compatible with Opal Mini products" (manual).
Procedure (the Opal Mini owner's manual (49-9000083 Rev. 0)):
- Hold Clean for 3 seconds to start a 55-minute descale cycle with Opal powder descaler in a full inner reservoir of hot water; then rinse with 3-minute rinse cycles, draining between them
- Remove every installed filter before descaling; soak a new filter in water before installing it
GE's specifications list a 3-minute clean cycle for the P4NM25PZSG.
Rear air filter
The Opal 2.0 manual says the air filter behind Ultra models should be checked and cleaned at least every 2 months: pull it out by its handle, wash it in warm soapy water, let it dry, and never put it in a dishwasher. The Opal Mini manual gives the same 2-month interval for models that have one.

Kinds of claim on this page: sizes, clearances, tank and bin capacities, power and warranty are product evidence from GE's structured specifications and manuals for the exact model; daily and hourly ice output, time to first ice and quiet ratings are GE's manufacturer claims, shown with GE's own test conditions and never as a measurement; filters and cleaning parts are compatibility statements: for the Opal 2.0 Ultra models, from each model's GE owner-centre accessory list; for the Opal Mini Pro, whose owner-centre page lists no accessories, from the "Related Product" entries in GE's product-page specifications, alongside the Opal Mini manual's statement that Opal Mini Water Filters are the only compatible filters; anything GE does not document, such as a plumbing hookup, is unknown and shown as not documented. Recall check: the CPSC recall database on 2026-10-03 (saferproducts.gov recall API: product name 'GE' (999 records, the API's cap) filtered for Opal, GE Profile, GE Appliances and ice makers. The 'ice maker', 'nugget', 'Opal' and 'Profile' queries returned an error, so no result was read from them); no recall read names an Opal or any GE ice maker; the one nugget ice-maker recall found (24008, October 2023) is for Gevi countertop nugget ice makers distributed by Far Success Trading, not GE. That is not proof of safety: check your unit's model number. Nothing here was tested: no ice output, noise, melt or cleaning measurements. Output and quiet figures are GE's own claims under GE's stated conditions.
